Lady Gaga has come to the defense of Rebecca Black amidst the overwhelming criticism of her vocal talent. In a recent event at Musicians@Google, Lady Gaga showed her support for the 13-year-old singer, who has faced significant ridicule online for her song, Friday.
“I absolutely love it,” Gaga expressed her admiration for Black’s rise to fame on YouTube, where she has amassed over 35 million views. “Rebecca Black is a creative genius, and anyone who criticizes her as tacky is just plain wrong,” Gaga continued, though she admitted she hadn’t watched the video. Simon Cowell also came to Black’s defense over the weekend.
Black shared that she has faced online harassment due to her song, which she recorded with the help of Ark Studios in LA, funded by her mom’s investment of $2,000. She is said to be earning around $27,000 weekly from her music on iTunes and YouTube, as estimated by Billboard.biz. During her extended stay at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, known as “Google Goes Gaga,” the singer promoted Google Moderator, a tool her fans can use to send in questions in text or video format. Marissa Mayer from Google stated, “At Google, we have witnessed Gaga’s success by embracing technology and constantly bringing innovation to her fans.” – Reuters
